After arriving in the small village of Aldeia de Raiz, the group of adventurers were set to the task of uncovering the truth behind The Murder of Jose Sujeira. During the course of this investigation, the town's barber surgeon Gilherme Amêijoa informed them of a cyclical massacre that happens every 80 years in the D'Albergaria Estate - and that this night was the anniversary of that fateful event.

As they had been invited to join Sal and Magda Glumbo for dinner, they thought it prudent to go check in on their new acquaintances. Rather than arriving to warm greetings and a decadent feast, they found the house in a grim state of affairs.

The 'Hag'

Greeted at the door by a woman who identified herself as the true occupant of the house, Theda Vidigueira, the group was cordially invited inside. Theda, though not confrontational, was a concerning presence who explained that she had occupied this land since before the valley was settled. When the D'Alberaria Estate was constructed on her sacred land, she took it upon herself to inhabit the house as well.

She did not threaten the group, but rather gave them freedom to conduct their investigation in the manor. Additionally, Theda offered them a role in her 'pageant'; asking if perhaps one of them would be willing to slay the Glumbos to appease the house. When they declined, she did not become hostile; instead she left them to conduct their investigation.

The First Floor

The walls were all adorned with haunting paintings, attributed to the late Eva De Cabra; a small gallery off the hall showcased her progression from a rustic hobbyist to a masterful artist - it also seemed to document her spiral into darkness as the subject matter became more dark and twisted as her skills improved.

The floor held a number of dangers - a haunted piano enraged the possums that inhabited the walls of the old manor and a kitchen salamander cooked a woman who was trapped in the stove alive.

Through it all, the group was repeatedly warned to flee the house by the spirits of those that had been slain there in the past - though these warnings would be dismissed.

The Second Floor

Theda met the group with great concern in the sitting room on the second floor - pouring them all a glass of a healing elixir and, again, asking them to partake in her ritual sacrifice. The Executioner's Axe she left for them was picked up by Kadav Papazuzian.

During their conversation, a loud click was heard from deeper inside the house - they would later find that this was the sound of someone locking the bathroom door. By the time they managed to get the door open, it was too late to save the young woman who was bound in the bathtub where she was drowned in blood.

The master bedroom also held other surprises: Sal's Diary seemed to suggest that the two of them may be being held in the attic, and a disgusting old noose found in the closet appears to have recently been taken off whatever corpse it used to hold.

In a bedroom that previously belonged to some children, a haunted doll begged the group to check the room for a monster she believed to be hiding somewhere. The thing nearly took Elgor Silvershadow's face off when he checked under the bed, but ultimately it was destroyed and the doll could finally rest peacefully. Kadav procured a creepy bag with a living nightmare contained inside.

The Third Floor

Inside the study, a cackling fat possum was pulling stories from a nearly catatonic man. By offering his own amusing anecdote, Kadav satisfied the impish creature and it fled the room through a hole in the bookcase. The man, Glumbo's Butler, asked about the wellbeing of his family - his wife, the cook, and his daughter, the maid. Kadav gave him the rotting noose 'Just in case he needed it'.

When the group gathered in the trophy room, Theda arrived again to plead with the adventurers one more time - using the example that men are happy to sacrifice and slaughter beings they perceive as being lesser life forms simply to display their carcasses as trophies. When she left, it was unclear as to where she went.

In the nursery, the group found a wailing spectral baby and a trio of ill-tempered toys. Lord Elgor was quick to come up with a novel solution when he pinned one of them to the wall of the fireplace with his Immovable Rod and watched it burn up. The other two were hacked to bits and melted. The remaining toy was enough to placate the child, who then dissolved back into the spirit world.

Attic

Ascending the stairs to the attic, they found a strange chest waiting for them. Inside was a tray containing labeled compartments for six different items. Emptying his boot and his bag, Kadav found they had most of the requested items, but had to back track to find the missing two.

One item, labeled 'bloody eye' prompted the adventurers to revisit the corpse of the maid and pry an eye out of her skull. Unsurprisingly, this did not work.

In the art gallery, Ernie's possum friend helped point them to a beautiful cut ruby adorning the eye-socket of one of the statues. Attempting to pry it out caused the artwork to spring to life. Though it banished Ernie to inhabit one of the paintings, he returned to the physical world before any harm could come to him. After they defeated the statue, the were able to retrieve the 'Bloody Eye'.

Lastly, they decided to investigate the suspicious feast that the spirits had warned them to avoid. Morgamorgar cut into the roast pig, but it wasn't pig - it was imitation. It gurgled up into a massive aspic and attacked; the tablecloth pulled away and wrapped itself around Ernie's head. Despite the inherent danger, both of the threats were neutralized, and in the puddle of liquid pig Svorcra found an olive stuck on a single silver pin.

When placed in the compartments in the chest, not only did in reveal a strange pair of shears, but also unlocked the door to the inner chamber.

Showdown

Unsurprisingly, Theda was waiting for the group to arrive; both Salvadaro Harbin Glumbo and Magdalena Isabel A'Dora Glumbo were restrained and delirious next to a wicked cauldron that was emitting noxious fumes. She, once again, asked the group if they were willing to perform the task she had set before them - when they refused, she said they might as well sit in the audience.

Loro D'Albergaria, the first man to have committed the atrocious murders in the manor, emerged carrying an enormous axe. She commanded the ghoul to slay the Lord and the Lady, but the group didn't feel that they could stand by and watch this happen in good conscious. Passing the point of no return, they threw themselves into combat, but were easily overwhelmed by the power of Loro, Theda and her familiar, Filthy Jasper.

Theda revealed her true form, and begged Lord Elgor to please reconsider - offering her hand for him to accept her dark bargain. In order to buy time, he accepted her hand and was given the executioner's axe to decapitate the drugged Magda Glumbo. He swung the axe down on her, twisting it before impact to hit her with the blunt side. As he was distracting Theda, the others did their best to heal themselves and prepare for another round.

As Elgor brought the axe down a second time on Magda's head, the rest of the group sprang into action - Svorcra used his twisted blood magic to dehydrate the walking corpse of Loro, Morga chopped up his rival Filthy Jasper and the rest were able to take down Theda.

With the hag vanquished, the cauldron lost its magic and the Glumbos regained their senses. Sal immediately sprang to action after he saw that his wife was beaten nearly to death with a blunt object. He begged the group for assistance getting her to a doctor and they agreed to help the couple flee to safety.
